How to Make a Crossword from a Spelling List

Weekly spelling lists are already the right length for a classroom crossword — usually 8–16 words students must spell correctly. Turning that list into a printable puzzle with an answer key adds retrieval practice without inventing a brand-new activity from scratch.

Paste your spelling list or generate from a topic · teacher presets on Teachers.

1. Clean the list to A–Z answers

Keep one spelling word per line. Strip numbers, bullets, and non-letter characters so each answer is A–Z only. Prefer 3–12 letter classroom words; very long compounds may not place well in a compact teaching grid. Homophone pairs (flour / flower) are excellent — see our homophones example.

2. Add short definition clues (or fill with AI)

For spelling practice, clues should test meaning without giving away the letters: “Powder used for baking bread,” not “F____R.” In Words mode you can paste words alone and let AI draft clues (counts toward the free daily quota), then edit anything too vague. Or skip AI and type your own clues — layout never requires a credit.

3. Build the grid, then skim placements

Click Build grid. If a long word will not place, drop one item or swap a shorter synonym from the same unit. You can also Load example seed from a reviewed classroom printable and replace entries with this week’s list.

4. Print puzzle + answer key

Use Printable or the Teachers landing for Letter/A4, optional name/class/date lines, and a matching answer key. Free exports may include a light site footer; Pro removes branding. Step-by-step print tips: How to print crossword worksheets.
